If you had $10, how many people do you think you could feed with that $10? If you’re asikng people to buy wholesome nutritious foods with that money, you’re not going to be able to get much because buying nutritious wholesome quality food can be expensive. Hence, people tend to buy the ramen noodles and the macaroni and cheese boxes to donate. With $10, I could buy three 12pack boxes of noodles, or 20 boxes of macaroni and cheese; that’s 36 ramen noodle meals or 20 macaroni and cheese meals. Granted, they’re not quality or wholesome or organic…but it is food. It’s some type of nutrition.I think there has to be a balance between affordable and nutritious. We have our own families to care about, also. My suggestion would be to have more community gardens. The vegetables could be donated to 7Hills or the Salvation Army or even to the various churches that serve Community Meals. There’s a great show on the Food Network called “Semi Home Made” with Sandra Lee. She does a wonderful job of mixing up store bought and home-made meals. Community Meals does a wonderful job of semi-home made meals. However, it’s the people who are too proud to eat that I worry about. It’s the families that are on the verge of despair that I worry about. When these families are awaiting their food bag from 7Hills or wherever, let’s throw in some garden fresh veggies and/or fruit. We can feed our community from within our community along with asikng the big sponsors for assistance. Together, with enough volunteers, we can strive to create an abundance of food that was grown with love.
